Woke DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Programs

Key facts

Like Critical Race Theory (CRT), woke DEI view everything through the lens of race and identity, rather than individual merit. It categorizes Americans into privileged, dominant culture, or overrepresented groups versus disadvantaged, marginalized, or underrepresented groups based on race.

Diversity is often limited to diversity of skin color or racial/ethnic background, rather than diversity of ideas. Unfortunately, it has been used by colleges and corporations to discriminate against high-performing racial groups, including Asian Americans.

Equity aims to eliminate racial disparities to achieve equal outcomes, rather than ensuring equal rights for all Americans. It has been used to eliminate merit-based admission tests in elite high schools and colleges.

Inclusion should encourage freedom of speech, but in practice, it suppresses different viewpoints. Often, dissenting opinions are labeled as “racist” or “microaggressions.” By November 2023, the National Association of Scholars documented 291 academic cancellations in the United States and Canada, resulting in job losses for professors and admissions issues for students due to DEI violations.

Most 4-year colleges and over 80% of medium or large community colleges in the U.S. have implemented DEI programs. On average, each college employs 45 DEI staff, contributing millions of dollars to college costs according to a 2021 study.

The Biden Administration has launched more than 300 DEI projects within the federal bureaucracy. Some of these initiatives call for discretionary grants and contracts to be awarded based on advancing racial equity. Additionally, the Department of Defense requested close to $115 million for diversity and inclusion efforts in its 2024 budget request.

42% of state and local government human resource departments report having a formal DEI program. In 2023, 48% of school districts with more than 15,000 students, and 89% of school districts with more than 100,000 students, had a chief diversity officer.

According to a new survey by WorldatWork, more than eight in 10 (83%) U.S. organizations are currently implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in 2021. All Fortune 100 companies and many other organizations have committed to DEI initiatives. The estimated DEI spending in the U.S. is $4.3 billion, according to Reporterlinker.com.

Florida, the Dakotas, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah have enacted laws to prohibit government funding for DEI programs.
